Letter to Anne McLellan and Tony Volpe
If this is an example of Canadian Justice it isn't the type of justice that I can respect. I warn you, Miss McLellan, that you will have this "dog" nipping at your heels in the next Federal General Election if this becomes fact.
I repeat what I told you around Christmas of 2001 with regard to these security matters: I am completely opposed to changing our civil rights for the sole benefit of any foreign power. It was not good legislation and it never should have been countenanced.
I repeat, also, that two of my Dane ancestors fought for the American Revolution by assisting Joshua Holt's 4th Foot of Massacheusetts in 1774 and the brother of the second generation was in the battle at Stilwater after which Burgoyne surrendered. Furthermore, a distant cousin of these men, Nathan Dane, was a delegate to the Constitutional Congress of 1787, co-drafter of the Northwest Ordinance (under which the States of Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan were governed for several years), founder of Dane Hall and Dane Chair of Law at Harvard University. These men must be threshing in their graves at the way this Mr. Bush and his Republican cronies have so cavalierly ignored the requirements of the Bill of Rights of the Constitution of the United States of America...and you, Miss McLellan, are no better than this Mr. Bush.
I demand an immediate full and public trial of Mohamad Harkat or his immediate release with a full and unqualified apology to him: I cannot accept any less.
K. Allan Dane
