Letter to Paul Martin
I am writing to express my disgust that you and Hon. Ms. Anne McLellan appear to plan to deport Mohamed Harkat to Algeria. According to Amnesty International, there have been authenticated reports that torture is often used in that country.
In some ways such a deportation, without a trial, is like the notorious practice of "rendition" carried by the CIA, acting under Mr. Bush's directives. Under your leadership, Canada is becoming like the USA and will, like the USA, become known in the world, not as a land of free people, but as a land where Civil Liberties have been lost.
The Hon. Ms McLellan is my MP, but I find it very difficult to accord anyone honour who is careless of our Civil Liberties. Canadians will remember those politicians who fail to protect them.
Please reconsider. Give Harkat a trial and imprison him if he is guilty of something and free him if he is not.
