Many of you generously offered to help us on many occasions if we ever needed anything. If you have done so already, or if you are helping in other ways, thank you. However, if you would like to help, or you can do a bit more, that time has come...We need your help NOW.
All of you are very familiar with our case and know that a negative ruling came down on March 22nd in regards to the validity of the Security Certificate under which my husband, Mohamed Harkat has been detained since Dec. 10th, 2002 (33 months) without any charges or access to the evidence. The good news is, 120 days after the ruling, Moe is eligible to apply for a bail hearing. No date has been set yet, but Moe's lawyers are looking into a hearing date at end of September.
On March 22nd, Judge Dawson of the Federal Court of Canada ruled that there were ''reasonable'' grounds to believe that my husband was a threat to National Security: all based on SECRET EVIDENCE that CSIS provided. Mohamed's lawyers never had, nor will they ever, have access to that ''so called'' evidence under the Security Certificate process.As you may know, Adil Charkaoui, a Security Certificate detainee in Montreal, was released on bail in February of this year. Although his conditions are very strict, he is now allowed to live with his wife and kids, something for which I have been longing for a verylong time. Moe can't wait to come back home and taste ''some kind'' of freedom in the near future and enjoy the simple things in life like fresh air or enjoying a homemade meal. WHY this email?
We need local supporters and friends to support Moe's conditions by signing bonds, sureties and affidavits. We also need help raising $50 000 that will be needed for bail and legal expenses. At the bail hearing for Adil Charkaoui, the Federal Court Judge noted being impressed by the massive local support and high profile folks which Mr. Charkaoui had received. We have to do better or surpass that in order to make this happen for Moe. We are looking for local supporters who are willing to help us out! Join our committee for the next few weeks...help us raise the necessary funds and support! There are 3 ways in which you can help: 1. Make a donation towards our defence fund. Send a cheque made out to Justice for Mohamed Harkat Committee to: Justice for Mohamed Harkat Committee 145-B Rue Laurier Gatineau (Hull), QC J8X 3W4 2. Offer a cash bond. This is a promise to deposit money with the court in the event that mohamed's bail is granted. 3. Offer a performance bond. This is a promise to pay money to the court if Mohamed is released and subsequently breaks his bail conditions. The money is payable only if a court determines the person signing the bond failed to do everything they could to stop the conditions from being broken.
