Canada's Supreme Court has struck down the controversial security certificate process which allowed the Canadian government to detain and deport foreign-born terror suspects. The nine judges ruled that the security certificate system - in place since 1978 - violated Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The system allowed a suspect to be held indefinitely or deported on the basis of evidence presented in secret. Read the decision Charkaoui vs. Canada. in English. En Français.

June 26, 2006:
The hunger strike has ended after approximately 4 weeks. The Canadian Border Security Agency agreed to the final two demands, to remove the 1-hour phone call limit and to provide a better canteen arrangement. The three men (Jaballah, Mahjoub and Almrei) have started eating again.
