Dear Ms. Harkat,
I stand in solidarity with you in your fight against security certificates. Many people detained on security certificates are denied their basic civil rights, including access to friends and family, the right to appeal and access to evidence. Because detainees should be allowed the right to fight their charges in a fair trial, the Canadian government should revoke all current security certificates, which deny this possibility.
The New Democratic Party of Canada is in favour of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. We believe in access to due process of law in a timely fashion. The current process is open to serious abuse. As a strong advocate for human rights, I oppose security certificates and along with the NDP caucus will continue to demand that civil liberties be respected by the Canadian government.
Please accept my best wishes for your event on June 17th.
Yours truly,
Ed Broadbent
