Here are the most recent items which deal with the security certificate case of Mohamed Harkat.

On May 23, 2006 Mohamed Harkat was ordered released from prison by Justice Eleanor Dawson after 3 1/2 years behind bars. On June 21 he was actually released. He is now reunited with his wife Sophie and the two are living at Sophie's mother's home in Ottawa under very strict bail conditions. Like Adil Charkaoui Moe must wear a GPS tracking device and his phone communications and his movements outside the home are restricted.

Canada's Supreme Court has struck down the controversial security certificate process which allowed the Canadian government to detain and deport foreign-born terror suspects. The nine judges ruled that the security certificate system - in place since 1978 - violated Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The system allowed a suspect to be held indefinitely or deported on the basis of evidence presented in secret. Read the decision Charkaoui vs. Canada. in English. En Français.
